On a warm night in late 1865, Sheriff Billup Poole encounters the smoldering ashes of Gilly Pines, an Arkansas border town. It is the third one destroyed, not by war or natural disaster, but by an unspeakable evil, and this one is too close to home. Fearing his own town of Menifee will be next, Poole employs the help of a man with a reputation for handling dark matters beyond mortal reasoning.

Sheriff Poole has never met anyone like him. The man bears a tree-like scar across his rugged face, the mark of a childhood encounter with darkness. He wears a tattered Union uniform with charred bones strung around his neck, a satchel of sacred ash, and two howdah pistols. He is feared and revered across the South. His moniker is whispered on the lips of Black and White folks alike, who have no one else to turn to when evil sits at their door.
